The 2013 Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta will be held on 24th – 26th May.

The Regatta has its roots in the Sailing Trawler races held in Torbay since the early 1800’s. In 1914, King George V presented the Perpetual Challenge Cup also popularly known as the ‘King George V Cup’ or the ‘Kings Cup’, to be raced for by Brixham registered sailing trawlers over 40 tons. This was competed for annually from 1919 until 1939 when the war ended racing, it was not re-started for almost 60 years. The Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta was revived by enthusiasts in 1997.   Under the organisation of the Heritage Sailing Committee, the event will once again be hosted by Brixham Yacht Club.

This year’s Regatta will see the participation of the Pilot Cutter Jolie Brise. The visit is to coincide with the unveiling in Brixham of a Blue Plaque to her former skipper Commander E.G. Martin. Apart from many other nautical accolades, he won the first Fastnet Race with Jolie Brise in 1925. The family of Commander Martin are very kindly donating a trophy to the Heritage Committee and this will be presented within the Regatta to the winner of the Pilot Cutters at the 2013 and future Regatta’s. We are therefore hoping to attract a number of Pilot Cutters to enter next year’s event.
